Make Back to SChool Safe for Kids with Allergies and Asthma

As kids return to school, parents of children with allergies or asthma have more on their plates than just school supply lists. A safe and healthy school experience requires thoughtful planning, updated medical forms, and clear communication between families and school staff.

We’ve created a free, downloadable checklist to make your prep easier. With just a little time and planning now, you can help your child, and their teachers, start the school year with peace of mind.

What’s Included in the Checklist

Our back-to-school allergy & asthma care checklist covers all the essentials, so nothing slips through the cracks.   Download and print your checklist to bring to your next appointment.

  • Emergency Care Plan (ECP) and an Allergy or Asthma Action Plan: These ensure staff know what to do in case of a reaction or asthma flare.
  • Individual Health Care Plan (IHCP) and 504 Plan Paperwork: Submit updated accommodations documentation for classroom, lunch, PE, and beyond.
  • Medication Renewal Reminders: Double-check expiration dates on prescriptions and refill as needed.
  • Updated Emergency Contacts: Confirm that all phone numbers and emergency details are current.

Parent Action Items to Tackle Now

Use the checklist to get ahead before school is back in full swing:

  1. Book an appointment with your child’s allergist or pediatrician now to avoid the back-to-school rush.
  2. Review medication expiration dates, including inhalers, epinephrine auto-injectors, and antihistamines. Request refills if needed.
  3. Download and complete forms, including 504 Plans and Asthma/Allergy Action Plans. Make sure your provider signs off on them.
  4. Meet with the school nurse and teachers to hand-deliver paperwork and discuss your child’s care plan.
